Choosing a luminaire: start with the fitting, not the wattage

Wattage is the last thing to fix, not the first. The order that avoids re-lighting a plant is: the zone and the group decide the marking, the mounting position decides the fitting type, and only then does the mounting height and the area to be lit decide how much light is needed. Seventeen luminaire models cover the range from 9 W to 500 W, in gas and dust versions.

Gas and dust: two markings, one installation

Refineries, chemical plants and process units usually contain both gas-hazardous and dust-hazardous areas, sometimes in the same building — a coal or grain handling section inside a plant, or a bagging area next to a process unit. Luminaries are rated for gas (Ex db) and dust (Ex tb) protection: Zone 1 and Zone 2 for gases and vapours, Zone 21 and Zone 22 for combustible dusts. A luminaire that carries only the gas marking is not the right choice for a dusty area, even if the enclosure is sealed, because the requirement is about surface temperature and dust layers, not only about ingress.

Read the marking before the datasheet. In Ex db IIC T6: d is flameproof, b indicates the level of protection for the equipment category, IIC is the gas group the luminaire may be used with, and T6 is the maximum surface temperature class. A luminaire marked IIB cannot be used where IIC is required, whatever its wattage.

What actually decides the light level

Three things: the mounting height, the area and reflectivity of the surfaces, and whether the task needs general or local lighting. Higher mounting heights push the choice towards the larger models; walkways and pipe racks are usually lit from a low mounting height with a wider beam. Because our range includes both compact and high-output bodies, the same duty can often be met in more than one way — which is why the mounting height is one of the first questions we ask.

Installation and the parts around the luminaire

A luminaire keeps its rating only if its cable entry is closed correctly: an entry with a damaged seal, an unused way left open, or a gland that is not suitable for the cable type all compromise it. Brackets, poles, mounting arms and guards are part of the same argument, and they are usually ordered with the luminaires so that the installation drawing is complete. Where the luminaire is mounted on vibrating equipment, the supply is normally run in flexible conduit to keep the movement away from the entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a higher wattage in the same body?

The body and the driver are rated as a set; the wattage range published for each model is the range it is certified and built for. Moving above it means moving to a larger model.

What is the difference between Ex d and Ex e for lighting?

Flameproof (Ex d) contains an internal ignition; increased safety (Ex e) prevents ignition by design and is used for the parts of the assembly where that applies, for example terminal compartments. Many luminaires use both, which is why markings such as Ex db eb appear on the label.

Do I need a different luminaire for Zone 21 or 22?

Dust areas are covered by the Ex tb marking. Confirm the dust group and the maximum surface temperature with the area classification for the zone before ordering.

Can the luminaires be supplied with brackets and poles?

Yes — tell us how the luminaire is to be mounted (ceiling, wall, pole, bracket, guard) and it will be supplied with the mounting arrangement rather than the head alone.

What about emergency lighting?

Handheld and emergency luminaires are part of the same lighting range, used for maintenance work and for escape routes in classified areas.

Explosion-Proof Lighting: Frequently Asked Questions

Short, practical answers we give most often to engineers specifying hazardous-area lighting.

How do I read the Ex marking on an explosion-proof light?

Read it in four blocks: protection concept (Ex d flameproof, Ex e increased safety, Ex nA non-sparking, Ex t dust), gas or dust group (IIA/IIB/IIC, IIIA/IIIB/IIIC), temperature class (T1–T6, where T6 caps surface temperature at 85 °C), and equipment protection level (Gb for Zone 1, Gc for Zone 2, Db for Zone 21, Dc for Zone 22). A typical luminaire for a combined gas and dust area is marked Ex d IIB T6 Gb / Ex tb IIIC T80 °C Db.

Which luminaire suits Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22?

Zone 1 (gas, occasional risk) needs flameproof Ex d or increased-safety Ex e construction with EPL Gb. Zone 2 (gas, abnormal only) may use Ex nA / Ex ec with EPL Gc. Dust Zones 21 and 22 need Ex tb enclosures with EPL Db or Dc and an IP6X ingress rating so dust cannot build up inside. Many of our fixtures carry a dual gas plus dust marking so one part number covers a mixed area.

How do I size wattage and beam angle?

Work backwards from the illuminance you must reach. Find the lux the task needs (roughly 30–50 lux for walkways and tank farms, 100–200 lux for general process areas, 300 lux and above for inspection benches), multiply by the area, then divide by the luminaire lumens and a maintenance factor of about 0.7 to allow for dirt and ageing. Our LED luminaires deliver roughly 120–150 lm/W. Use 60–90° optics for high bays and 120° for broad general lighting.

Can the same luminaire be used in hot, wet or corrosive areas?

Yes, provided the ambient and housing match the duty: enclosures are sealed to IP66 (IP67 for washdown and jet-spray areas) and T6 units keep surface temperature within limits across a wide ambient range. For coastal, offshore and chemical service we supply die-cast aluminium bodies with epoxy or polyester coating, or 316 stainless steel versions where chlorides and acids are present.
